New and Updated Specifications for the Use of Recycled Glass Aggregates
Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) QLD
In 2018, the Queensland Government sponsored a multi-year research project; P76: The Use of Recycled Glass in Pavements; with the aim of increasing the use of recycled crushed glass (RCG) in pavement applications, including both unbound granular pavement and asphalt layers.
The project found that RCG can be successfully incorporated into asphalt without detrimentally impacting performance. In 2020-21, NACOE conducted a demonstration project to assess the performance of recycled glass in asphalt. This research supported TMR’s publication of a new technical specification for recycled glass aggregates and updated its asphalt specification to allow up to 2.5% RCG in surfacing layers and 10% RCG in all other layers.
This June 2021 NACOE webinar summarises the key findings of this project and the resultant new requirements of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads MRTS36 Recycled Glass Aggregate specification as well as the recent changes made to MRTS30 Asphalt Pavements and MRTS101 Aggregates for Asphalt, permitting the use of Recycled Glass (RCG) as an aggregate in asphalt.
