Sustainability
In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Another way of looking at this is that sustainability is about actively responding to local and global social and environmental challenges in a way that shapes a positive future for the natural environment and communities. A fundamental premise of sustainability is generational equality, well encapsulated in the Native American adage – ” We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors but borrow it from our children”.
Civil construction involves the planning, design, construction and maintenance of both natural and physically built environments such as roads, railways, buildings, dams, sewer systems, bridges, and tunnels.
